Art Appreciation – Musée des Beaux Arts

About this event :

The January programme for the Art Appreciation group will be a visit to the Strindberg exhibition at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lausanne. We have a guided tour given by Nelly Bertschi, who was our guide on a previous occasion last year.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) was better known as a Swedish playwright. He had a troubled childhood and a turbulent  adult life, had strong left-wing political leanings reflected in his writings. He came close to winning the Nobel prize for literature in 1909 but lost to a fellow (female) Swede.

He was also a painter, with 117 works acknowledged as his. His friends included Edvard Munch and Paul Gauguin, but his own work expresses stormy land and seascapes, often painted during periods of personal crisis in his life.

Join us at the gallery, on Wednesday January 11th. We will meet at the entrance to the museum at 14:00.
