APRIL MONTHLY MEETING in 2 parts:

When: Friday 16th March 2021, @10:00 am  –  On Zoom!

              Friday 23rd March 2021, @10.00 am – On Zoom!

IWC celebrates 50 Years of Women’s Suffrage in Switzerland

April 16, 10 am: PART 1 – Clare O’Dea

On a cold, damp Sunday in 1959, women’s right to vote in Switzerland is turned down at the ballot box with 67% of Swiss men against it! Not until 1971 did Swiss women finally get the right to vote. This year, 2021, marks exactly 50 years since Swiss women got the right to vote. Timeline: the long road to women’s suffrage

Journalist and author Clare O’Dea, originally from Ireland, has written a compelling novel, Voting Day, about four Swiss women on that cold Sunday in February 1959. Clare’s book is a very realistic story of the life of four Swiss women in the 1950s.

April 23, 10 am: PART 2 – Katie Hayoz, Alnaaze Nathoo and Barbara Nigg

This book, published by Bergli Books in February 2021 to honor the 50 years of Swiss women’s right to vote, celebrates the diverse accomplishments, struggles, and strengths of Swiss women. One-page biographies, illustrated by Swiss illustrator Mireille Lachausse, give readers a glimpse into the lives of 50 Swiss women – both historical and contemporary – who inspire and intrigue. Spies, activists, entrepreneurs, entertainers, politicians, athletes, midwives, mothers… Swiss women are daring, ingenious, and brave. Though the country is small, the number of heroines is vast!
Three of the five authors, listed below, will talk to us about their writing process, share a short selection of the biographies, and answer any questions you might have. The two other authors are Laurie Theurer and Anita Lehmann.

MARCH MONTHLY MEETING

When: Friday 12th March 2021, @10:00 am  –  On Zoom!

The IWC is delighted that Journalist Luigi Jorio will be our guest speaker.

Mr. Luigi Jorio will give a talk about “Why Melting Swiss Glaciers Affect Us All”.
The Alpine glaciers are disappearing due to global warming. They could already have disappeared by the end of the century. If they all go, the look of the Alps will change for good. The consequences will be felt not only in Switzerland’s mountains but throughout Europe. The issue of the “Melting Swiss Glaciers” is not a Swiss problem but a worldwide/global problem.

The content of the talk is composed of the following topics, such as……!
  1. Some general information about glaciers.
  2. The history of the Swiss glaciers.
  3. The names of the Swiss glaciers and where those glaciers are situated in Switzerland.
  4. What’s happening in the Alps…..
  5. Consequences of the Swiss glaciers melting for Switzerland and the surrounding countries.
IWC members/expatriates love to travel the world and explore their surroundings every time they have arrived in a new country, place, or city. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, members may take the opportunity to explore the beautiful Swiss countryside. The keynote of the meeting will be that members are able to visit and investigate by themselves the problem of the “Melting Swiss glaciers”!

ART APPRECIATION – THE HERMITAGE

Thursday, 27 September 2018 at 14:00

Hermitage Foundation, Lausanne

The painter Henri Manguin may not be as well known as other Fauvists but he was an important member of this group, loved colour and was referred to by the poet Apollinaire as the ‘voluptuous painter’. His work reflects the joys of being alive and a happy sensuality; it features nudes, Mediterranean landscapes, domestic scenes and still lifes, all with a glorious use of colour. Come and join the art group on Thursday, September 27th to enjoy this exhibition. We’ll be meeting at the door of the Hermitage at 14:00, and if any of you would like to have lunch first, the restaurant L’Esquisses, on the site, is available, reservations recommended.

Please sign up at art@iwc-lausanne.org if you would like to join us.
